Books

History of Italian Renaissance Art, 7th edition, by Frederick Hartt and David Wilkins – This is a textbook history of the Italian Renaissance, published in many editions.

Painting and Experience in Fifteenth-Century Italy: A Primer in the Social History of Pictorial Style, by Michael Baxandall – This book is important in considering the social history of art.  If you want to know how the economics of the Renaissance influenced the art of this time, read this book.

Other Web Sites

Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists – In the sixteenth century, Vasari wrote a history of Italian art from the thirteenth century until his time.  Today, this is a gold mine of information on Italian painters, sculptors, and architects.

Renaissance Interactives – This site offers a broad overview of the historical context in Italy during the Renaissance.  Appropriate for younger students.

Sparknotes Italian Renaissance – If you can get past the plethora of ads on this site, it provides some good depth on a range of Renaissance topics.
